Suranjit crticises Khaleda for proposing abolition of elite force RAB (Rapid Action Battalion)

RABDHAKA, May 12, 2014 (BSS) - Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit Sengupta, MP, today bitterly criticised BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia for proposing abolition of elite force RAB (Rapid Action Battalion).

"It's a wrong perception of Khaleda Zia that all problems will be resolved with the abolition of RAB. Her remarks might have come out of vengeance. I believe, RAB needs immediate reforms," he said while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion in the city.

Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion at the auditorium of the Institution of Diploma Engineers at Kakrail in the capital in observance of the fifth death anniversary of eminent nuclear scientist Dr M A Wazed Miah, son-in-law of Bangabandhu and husband of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Adviser to Bangabandhu Academy Haji Md Selim, MP, chaired the discussion also addressed, among others, by Awami League publicity and publication affairs secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud, Awami League leader Chitta Ranjan Das and Samyabadi Dal leader Haroon Chowdhury.

Suranjit Sengupta, also a senior parliamentarian of the ruling Awami League, said, "Begum Zia proposed abolition of RAB which was raised during their period. BNP standing committee member Dr Khondokar Mosharraf Hossain remarked in London in 2006 that RAB is their main force".

"The tendency to abolish any force will not be good for politics. I didn't accept renaming of BDR as BGB. Contributions of BDR in our war of liberation couldn't be ignored."

But, the senior Awami League leader said, "RAB needs reforms. That should be brought in the legal and social process. The main theory of reforms in RAB would be that they should take their stance for accountability. That would bring welfare to the country. Without accountability any institution could become dangerous."

Turning to the Narayanganj incident, the senior AL parliamentarian said, "It has become inevitable for the country's politics to unearth the truth behind the inhuman incident. For the purpose, help and cooperation of all are required. It's essential also for our national life. The government has been sincerely trying to try culprits in the gruesome killing. All efforts are on to nab those criminals.. some of them have already been nabbed .and the main accused Nur Hossain would be arrested soon."
